THE STANDARD, DOWNTOWN LA

The second hotel of the Standard brand was the former Superior Oil headquarters in Downtown LA.   Traces of its mid-century corporate origins are preserved in the building's historic lobby, notably in the “S” shaped door handles and 15-time zone analog clock.   The chic and comfortable ground-floor restaurant, a re-imagined 1960s cafe drenched in yellow light, is a homage to iconic French designer Pierre Paulin.    Upstairs, the Downtown Standard is a landmark of contemporary comfort.   Guest rooms feature carpet-covered platform beds and open-plan soaking tubs – generously oversized to lure athletes from the nearby Staples Center in for the night.   Offering spectacular views of Los Angeles, the legendary rooftop poolside lounge is among the first destination rooftop bars in America.

SHD is currently back to work refurbishing the Downtown Standard's public spaces.   The next phase in this ongoing design collaboration is scheduled to be complete in 2020.
